Niger is the home to the last herd of Giraffes in West Africa and the only herd of giraffes that are not in a game reserve, roaming wild.  In the early 70s there were hundreds of giraffes in Niger.  In 1996, this number hit a all-time low of 50.  The herd has made a rebound and has about 150 giraffes at present.
